The Berrye Fortress, located in Berrie and classified as a Historical Monument, thanks the Mission Bern for being selected as part of the Loto du Patrimoine in September 2023. This recognition should help preserve and restore a 12th-century medieval site, restore its original role of protection and hospitality, and also maintain the identity of the village of Berrie. Every stone replaced is a promise to safeguard and pass on the heritage and values of our ancestors.
The second phase of the restoration program, which will be supported by the Mission Bern, will begin in 2024 and will include, among other things, the refurbishment of the watchtowers of the keep to restore its original appearance, the roof, the chimney and the continuation of the restoration of the ramparts, bridges, and entrance gate.
The uniqueness of the project also lies in the use of a micro-quarry in the moats of the castle, which will allow the use of the same stones (tuffeau) as our ancestors did more than 800 years ago, while respecting the principles of an eco-responsible approach.
Sandra and Gilles COLINET also thank the services of the DRAC of Poitiers for their support since the start of this project.
